[00:00:00] Cordialis: The Shona people of Zimbabwe use the term “Pachoto” to describe not only the wood-fire powered hearth on which food cooks, but also the fireside, where people gather to share a meal, engage in some conversation or simply spend some time in fellowship. Pachoto is the place where giddy children gravitate towards in the late evening hours, they sit cross legged as they eagerly await an elder, usually a grandparent, to entertain them with traditional song and story.
When the elder begins. “Paivepo”- once upon a time, they yell “Nzefunde” in unison to signify that they are listening and encourage the elder to go on telling fables that encourage virtues such as patience and kindness, often through the eyes of the precarious [00:01:00] characters of tsuro, gudo, kamba naShumba- the rabbit, the baboon, the tortoise, and the lion.
Pachoto is not just an enchanting place for children. It is the place where adults gathered to chat and catch up for the day. The place where family squabbles are settled, decisions are made, wisdom is imparted at discussions on a wide variety of topics are held.
Pachoto is also the fireside where this podcast begins. The fireside where this, the Pachoto Podcast draws its name and inspiration.
